Jaw Tumors and Cysts

Various tumors and cysts can occur in the jaws, originating from the teeth or not originating from the teeth. For the diagnosis of these diseases, a small biopsy is usually performed and a definitive diagnosis is made by histopathologic examination. According to the diagnosis, a treatment plan for the disease is created.

Jaw Cysts

Jaw Cysts are mostly of dental origin. These cysts that form around the tooth root can reach large sizes if left untreated. In patients with cysts at the root tip, simply extracting the tooth is not sufficient for treatment. When the tooth is removed and the cyst is left in the bone, it can continue to grow and reach large volumes. This may require more teeth to be extracted in the future.

Highlights:

  1. Dental Cysts:
    • Periapical Cyst: It is the most common type of dental cyst. It is usually caused by an infection in the root of the tooth.
    • Dentigerous Cyst: It usually forms around impacted teeth.
    • Odontogenic Keratocyst: It is an aggressive type of cyst and may tend to recur.
  2. Treatment Process:
    • Diagnosis: For definitive diagnosis, a biopsy is performed and evaluated by histopathologic examination.
    • Surgical Intervention: Surgical intervention is necessary in the treatment of jaw cysts. It is important to completely remove the cyst and clean the affected tissues.
    • Follow-up: After treatment, the risk of recurrence of the cyst is monitored with regular check-ups.
  3. Tooth Extraction and Cyst Treatment:
    • Simply removing the tooth is not enough to treat the cyst. After tooth extraction, the cyst must also be removed.
    • If the cyst is left in the bone, it will continue to grow and more teeth may need to be extracted.
  4. Non-Tooth Cysts and Tumors:
    • Ameloblastoma: It is a slow-growing, usually benign tumor, but it can grow aggressively and may need to be surgically removed.
    • Miksoma: It is a rare, benign but invasive tumor.
    • Jaw Bone Tumors: They can be both benign and malignant. Biopsy and histopathologic examination are required for definitive diagnosis.

Conclusion

Jaw cysts and tumors can be managed with early diagnosis and correct treatment. Failure to treat cysts in tooth roots in time can lead to serious complications and cause further tooth loss. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of jaw cysts and tumors require the intervention of a specialist dentist or oral surgeon.
