What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the surgical removal of a tooth from the tooth socket. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and can be performed for various reasons. Tooth extraction may be necessary to maintain or improve dental health.

What is Impacted Tooth Extraction?

Impacted tooth extraction is the surgical removal of teeth that are completely or partially embedded in the gum or bone tissue. Impacted teeth often have difficulty erupting and can put pressure on other teeth, causing pain, infection or tooth misalignment. This is usually the case for third molars (wisdom teeth).

Why Tooth Extraction?

There are various reasons why tooth extraction may be necessary:

  1. Cavities: When tooth decay has destroyed a large part of the tooth and cannot be repaired with restorative treatments, tooth extraction may be necessary.
  2. Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease): Severe gum disease can lead to loss of bone and tissue supporting the teeth. In this case, the teeth may become loose and need to be extracted.
  3. Tooth Trauma: If a tooth is broken or severely damaged as a result of accidents or injuries, an extraction may be necessary.
  4. Overly Dense Tooth Alignment: Before orthodontic treatment, it is sometimes necessary to extract one or more teeth to align them properly.
  5. Impacted Teeth: In particular, impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth, may need to be extracted when they struggle to erupt or cause pain, infection and pressure on other teeth.
  6. Infection: Extraction may be necessary when the infection in or around the tooth does not respond to antibiotic treatment or is at risk of spreading.
  7. Prosthesis or Dental Implant Preparation: Tooth extraction may be performed to create enough space in the area where a prosthesis or dental implant will be placed.
  8. Tooth Root Fractures: Fractures of the tooth root are often irreparable and may require tooth extraction.

Tooth extraction is a procedure that is decided after a detailed evaluation and diagnosis by the dentist. The treatment plan is made taking into account the patient’s general health and dental health.
